Endometriosis is a common gynecological condition that occurs when cells from the mucus membrane lining the uterus (endometrium) form implants that attach, grow, and function outside the uterus, generally in the pelvic region.

Much of the evidence rests on the relatively high incidence of other inflammatory autoimmune disorders (e.g., multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus) that occur in women with endometriosis.
