Forefoot pain

Pain-free steps start with expert foot care.

Addressing forefoot discomfort

The foot's intricate design includes numerous small joints, muscles, and tendons, and the forefoot region is equally complex. You might experience pain in various areas, such as the ball of your foot, beneath your toes, or within the tiny joints of your toes themselves. Regardless of the specific location, we understand how significantly this discomfort can impact your daily activities and enjoyment.

Digital deformities i.e. claw toes

Alterations in toe shape or alignment are frequent occurrences and can involve either one or both toe joints. Over time, muscle imbalances and other biomechanical factors may cause your toes to bend, elevate, or change form. If left untreated, conditions like hammer toes and claw toes can result in painful complications such as corns or calluses. These deformities may also make it challenging to find comfortable footwear that fits properly.

Plantar Plate Injury and Discomfort

The plantar plate is a small but crucial ligament that maintains toe stability. This ligament can become damaged due to various factors including regular use, aging, and different types of stress. Plantar plate injuries are a frequent source of pain in the toe and ball of the foot. If left unaddressed, this condition may eventually lead to toe deformities such as claw toes or hammer toes.

Neuromas and Bursitis

Morton's neuroma is characterized by a sharp, burning sensation that can cause stinging, burning, or numbness in the toes.

Bursitis, on the other hand, is a condition resulting from inflammation of the bursa - small, fluid-filled sacs. These sacs are typically located between structures such as muscles, tendons, and bones, acting as cushions to reduce friction.

Bunion Discomfort

Bunions are structural alterations of either the first toe joint or the fifth toe joint (also known as a tailor's bunion). As time passes, the joint space undergoes changes, resulting in a noticeable bony protrusion. These bunions can be a source of pain and may complicate the process of finding suitable footwear.

Treatment Approaches for Forefoot Pain

Our treatment strategies are tailored to your specific diagnosis, with the primary goals of alleviating pain and preventing future occurrences. These may include:

  • Customised home exercise programs designed to enhance flexibility and strength, while reducing and redistributing pressure in the forefoot.
  • Specialized strapping or taping techniques aimed at reducing pain and improving overall foot function.
  • Footwear adjustments or replacements to decrease pressure and alleviate tightness in the forefoot area.
  • Personalised orthotic devices custom-made to minimize harmful forces and redistribute pressure across the forefoot
